      Oregon Rep. Changes Stand On Online Gambling

      Oregon Representative Earl Blumenauer issued a statement after Wednesday’s Ways and Means Committee hearing on Jim McDermott’s bill, stating that he was wrong to oppose online gambling and that he had learned that it was hypocritical to oppose it. He also cited the continual need for good sources of revenue. He said he no longer wished to restrict United States citizens from playing at online casinos.

      Rep Frank Hopes To Bring Gambling Bill To Floor This Year

      Rep. Barney Frank, the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee has said that he plans to bring his bill legalizing online gambling before his committee in July and hopes to have it passed by the House this year.Frank testified before the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday in support of a bill by Rep. Jim McDermott, which sets up a framework for taxing online gambling. The committee was hearing evidence for and against such a proposal.

      The House Ways and Means Committee held a hearing today on the tax proposals related to Internet gambling. According to Ways & Means Committee Chairman Sander Levin (D-MI), this was not a hearing about the legality of online gambling but, “We meet today to explore the tax implication and proposals to legalize internet gambling. We need to get a sense of the size and scope of this emerging market which is almost exclusively conducted today outside the United States.”

      Ireland To Offer Regulated Online Gambling

      Canadian Man Pleads Guilty in U.S. Online Gambling Charge

      Douglas Rennick, a Canadian man, has pleaded guilty to a count of processing offshore bets of U.S. citizens. Originally Rennick was looking at a charge of conspiracy and bank fraud. He had allegedly laundered $350 million dollars for overseas internet gambling companies. Rennick was indicted in August and on Tuesday entered a guilty plea to the one charge in New York Federal court. Part of the plea was forfeiting $17.1 million and a possible prison term of 6-12 months.

      The United States justice Dept. today announced that Todd Lyons, of Beverly, MA, was charged with 36 counts of racketeering and related charges, for running an illegal gambling business in the United States but with the internet site in Antigua.
