Schleswig-Holsteins Approves 12 New Licenses

20 December 2012

Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost state in Germany, has authorized 12 companies to offer a range of online casino games as well as online poker. Included on the list of newly licensed operators is 888 Germany Limited, Cashpoint Malta Limited, Tipico Company Limited and bet365’s Hillside Limited out of Gibraltar.

These and other recent licensees, like Polco Limited (home of the Betfair brand), Personal Exchange International Limited, and ElectraWorks Limited Kiel (for its Bwin brand), have to adhere to several stipulations designed to thwart problem gambling. Each site must prohibit online poker bots and introduce “reality checks” each hour a player remains engaged in gambling online. These reality checks will inform casino customers of their win/loss ratios and hope to deter problem gambling. Alongside these player protection acts, licensed firms must also demonstrate the safeguards they have in place to secure their information technology infrastructures as well as player information.
