AUSTIN, Texas, May 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — HollywoodPoker.com, where the stars come to play, raised $30,000 for the 4th Annual Dennis Quaid Charity Weekend with 100% of the money benefiting four Austin, TX children charities. The Austin, TX event was held May 4-7, 2006. New to this year’s event was the HollywoodPoker.com Texas Hold ‘em Celebrity Challenge, helping the organization raise over $300,000 during the entire weekend. Quaid, who has called upon his friends at Hollywood Poker in the past to help raise money for the victims of Katrina, knew they would come through for him at this worthy event.

An elated Quaid said, “The Hollywood Poker event was a blast, we had so many people turn out, it was amazing. Next year we’ll make it even bigger!”

More than 900 people attended the poker event where Brett Cullen (“The West Wing”) was the highest placing celebrity in the tournament. Other celebrity participants for the weekend include Dennis Quaid, Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine), Topher Grace (In Good Company), Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac), Zac Efron (“Summerland”), Richard Schiff (“The West Wing”), Robert Loggia (Wild Seven), Rex Linn (“CSI: Miami”), Gordon Clapp (“NYPD Blue”), Gregory Itzin (“24″), Don Felder (The Eagles), Kyle Massey (“That’s So Raven”), Otis Thorpe (NBA Player) and many others. About Dennis Quaid Weekend

The Dennis Quaid Charity Weekend presented by H-E-B was founded in 2003. This year’s edition took place May 4-7, 2006, with over thirty Hollywood stars participating. All expenses of the Quaid Weekend are fully underwritten by sponsors, which allows 100% of the gross proceeds generated from the sale of event tickets and participant slots to directly benefit the following non- profit organizations: Any Baby Can, Austin Children’s Shelter, Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas; and the International Hospital for Children. While on location, nearly 20 years ago, filming the Big Easy in New Orleans, Dennis Quaid fell ill and was sent to the doctor who founded the International Hospital for Children, where he learned about the organization’s role in servicing the need for children’s medical care and assistance in third world countries; he has supported them ever since. The Dennis Quaid Charity Weekend was formed for the purpose of supporting both International and Austin, TX local children and is held every year in Austin, TX. The weekend raised approximately $340,000. Over $700,000 has been raised since 2003.

InterPoker Signs Poker Prodigy Scott Fischman
May 13, 2006

Scott Fischmean is the youngest poker player to ever to wear two back to back World Series of Poker Bracelets and now Scott has joined the InterPoker.com Extreme Team

Scott worked as a dealer at the Mirage Casino in Las Vegas in his early twenties, however when diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2002, he decided to try playing rather than dealing. His first tourney was in January of 2004 at The Grand American Poker Classic in Tunica, MS, placing an impressive 4th. Since that time, he’s played his way to nine final tables, including those at the Orleans Open, the Mirage Poker Showdown and the coveted World Series of Poker Events, where he dramatically defeated poker giants Joe Awada in the No-Limit Hold ‘em competition, and John Cover in a record-breaking H.O.R.S.E. victory. He then won the World Poker Tour Young Guns of Poker invitational tournament at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino which earned him a seat in the 2005 WPT Championship. In 2005, Scott finished 2nd in the No Limit Hold ‘em event, beating out 2305 competitors to nearly recapture his title.

Scott is quoted as saying “I’ve been impressed with InterPoker from the start, and I look forward to being a part of one of the most respected online poker rooms in the world. With InterPoker, it is apparent that they truly care about providing players with a safe, exciting and, above all, genuine poker experience on the web, and I am extremely pleased to be associated with them.”

Scott is also involved in promoting his new instructional poker book this summer and has plans to break the world record for longest continuous game of poker later this year. Good Luck Scott!

Prohibition Is Back Again
May 13, 2006

Lazlow 05/11/2006 11:55 am

Evidently there’s some fancy knock-twice secret-password poker parlor in New York City, because a friend invited me to come play. Texas has caused a lot of problems in the last few years, but the virus of Texas Hold ‘em ranks up there with other fine Texas traditions, such as executing the mentally handicapped and covering your ears and yelling “la-la-la-la” at pictures of Antarctica melting. Commercials for poker websites are all over television and radio, with tournaments seemingly every day at casinos, on cruise ships and in many cases, in the backrooms of bars.

Former Attorney General John Ashcroft launched the first Jesus jihad against online gambling. Commercials for gambling were forbidden. But gambling websites simply began promoting sister sites where you can “learn to play poker.” Once you’ve learned, there’s a handy link right there to an offshore-based poker server where your lunch can be lost, one river or flop at a time.

Gambling online is now a several billion dollar business. I have friends who play online, competing in tournaments, winning $100 occasionally. I’m far too busy at night playing Quake online to get into poker, and truth be told, it looks far more entertaining chasing people you don’t know with a rocket launcher than trying to take their money.

Congress has launched a response to poker: the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act. Approved by a House subcommittee, this legislation would make it a federal crime to gamble over the Internet. The punishment? Five years in prison. It’s always nostalgic to put the word “prohibition” in a law. Prohibition worked so well with alcohol (and yet another campaign from the pulpit). Marijuana prohibition has been going swimmingly, with federal troops arresting dying cancer patients.

The prohibition on online gambling is a change to the Wire Act, which was passed by Congress in the 1960s, making it illegal to place gambling wagers over the telephone. This was to curtail sports wagers, and with great results. It’s nearly impossible to walk into any bar in America and buy boxes before the Super Bowl.

And like anything at all that Congress attempts these days, what legislation would be complete without someone standing up, putting on a pout face and gravely invoking 9/11 and terrorism? Yes, the banking industry has testified for the law, saying that monitoring payment transactions drains resources from monitoring for terrorists. Actually, American banks are jealous. Many offshore gambling sites set up accounts for players in offshore banks where regulators can’t seize their assets. So billions of untaxed wagers are going offshore and corporate banks aren’t making millions on it, so Congress is working to put poker players in prison.
