Poker has had a tough year, with congressional legislation that has taken some of the big players out of the U.S. market. That in turn has hurt the turnout–the 6,358 entrants in the main event, down more than 25 percent from last year’s number. To take this further, the fewer number of people paying the $10,000 fee, means there’s less for the winner ($8.25 million vs. $12 million last year).
Despite all this, the World Series of Poker is still compelling television. Last year, ESPN averaged almost one million viewers per broadcast and I have no reason to believe that this year’s tape-delayed coverage will take a significant hit.
Poker is poker. It’s loved by many. And the lipstick cameras and features make it very watchable — even, believe it or not, to people who have no clue how poker works.
But the World Series of Poker and ESPN could be in trouble, depending on who wins. Why? Because you can’t underestimate that it’s not only how the cards are played, it’s also who is playing them.
Over the last couple years, ESPN and the WSOP has had the great fortune of celebrating winners with compelling stories. The boom really started in 2003 when Chris Moneymaker won it all. Remember? He was an accountant in Tennessee who got his seat by winning a $39 satellite tournament. The man with the great name took the title and brought home $2.5 million. The following year it was Greg Raymer–the patent lawyer, took home $5 million. Then Joe Hachem, a poker pro, won.
There are nine people at the final table and five of them are poker professionals.
You can play with the best in the World Series of Poker. And the awesome stories of Moneymaker and Raymer make it a must see.
Good luck to all finalists. Watch here for updates on the WSOP.

WSOP will be covered on National TV. This should be a very interesting event.
ESPN states “Whether or not poker is a sport, it is entertainment.”
Scott Hanley, ESPN’s senior director of programming, said “I think it’s a sport and an entertainment.” That’s what we do. It’s our name: the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network.”
“It’s reality-based. You meet these players, you like them or you don’t like them.”
“And this year you will really be able to see them sweat.”
The poker camera, which shows each player’s hole cards and has made the poker more accessible, ESPN will broadcast 32 original hours of the WSOP in high definition. A poker First.
Jamie Horowitz said: There is an associated cost there,” “The value of going high def is showing a game based on reading your opponent.”
Delayed coverage of the WSOP continues Tuesday and runs through October, 30. ESPN will offer a live pay-per-view broadcast of the final table, which starts Tuesday.
This is an exciting way to watch the chips fall. It is surely a great way to get involved in the game. Be sure you stay tuned to ESPN to watch the WSOP in action.
Watch this space as we keep you updated on the live coverage.

An exciting day for sure for Everest, as they send 39 players to the World Series of Poker Side Event # 49, which is held at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
“The WSOP side event is exploding in popularity,” said Jonathan May, Everest Poker property manager. “This year’s event saw 3200 players joining in the game, compared to less than 500 in 2006.”

Close behind with Francisco Lopez (pakito) from the Everest Poker Spanish team finished at 217, earning $3,441. Rounding out the three was Albes Danal (chefe) from Germany. He placed 225th and earned $3,441.
“I’m tempted to say that our party at the Palms was even more enjoyable than the actual event,” added May. “All of our players got some of that trademark Everest Poker hospitality.”
The thirty-nine players who made it to the WSOP Side Event received a gift bag loaded with Everest Poker swag and enjoyed a part at the world-famous Palms Hotel and Casino. In addition to free food and drinks, they also got some tantalizing hints about upcoming events such as the Everest Poker Avalanche finale and the Everest Poker European Cup.

1,287 players showed up as the play went well into the night. This wrapped up Day 1A of the 2007 Main Event.
Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson both 10 time Bracelet winners, were send home early. Two things that are for sure: Phil Hellmuth’s 11 Bracelts cannot be tied this year. So Phil Hellmuth can brag for the next year about his unique accomplishments.
Day 1A sent home more than 445 players.
WSOP numbers steadily went up since the poker boom in 2003. Although since the UIGEA passed, the number of USA online qualifiers fell greatly. Most of the online qualifiers are coming from Europe where the poker boom is still growing.
Everyone has high hopes that the total number of players will get much higher.
That is left to be seen at the moment.
