The Big Bopper slot by Realtime Gaming is a tribute to JP Richardson Jr., a singer who died in a tragic plane crash just as his career was really taking off. This game features tons of symbols relating to music of that era as well as an atypical format and a high hit-rate. This is definitely a high-action game, and it's a great example of RTG taking things in a different direction than the rest of the industry while still jumping on the trend of music-based slots that happened leading up to the release of this game.

Game Format

The format for this slot uses six reels with three rows. This title also uses the all-ways format, and that means there are an incredible 729 ways to win on every single spin. Betting is based on increments of 30 coins, so with $0.01 coins at the bottom end of the betting range, you can wager as little as $0.30 per turn. Betting goes up to the $7.50 per spin level, so there's a pretty reasonable selection of options available that will suit the vast majority of players. For the sake of simplifying things, you'll only choose the total amount you want to wager per spin instead of dealing with individual coin sizes. Wins are also awarded in both directions.

Grouped Wild Multipliers

Richardson himself appears with a guitar in stacked wilds that come three at a time. You'll find him on the middle four reels, and the only symbols he doesn't substitute for are the scatters. If you get a winning combination that includes at least one of The Big Bopper himself, then you'll get a 3x multiplier on your win. When you combine this with the all-ways format, it's clear that there are some pretty incredible multi-line combos that can happen to give players some extremely impressive wins.

Scatter Symbols

The word "Bopper" is spelled out with the letters B, O, P, P, E and R on the first through sixth reels, respectively, for the scatter symbols. You need at least three anywhere on the reel for a payout, and you can earn bonus features with this symbol as well.

You can get a couple of different bonus features if you get all six of the scatters on the reels at once. To make this easier to trigger, you get a scatter-based re-spin if you get three or more of them on the reels at all. The game will continue to issue re-spins if you get at least one more scatter on that initial re-spin, and this repeats until you either don't get another scatter or spell out the entire "BOPPER" name in scatters, no matter which rows they land on, to trigger the feature.

Bonus Features

One feature gives you an instant win for a win worth up to 20 times your total bet initially. He will continue to sing through Chantilly Lace to award wins worth as much as 250 times your total bet as well. Players also have a chance for up to 45 free spins with multipliers as high as 10x. This multiplier combines with the 3x wild multiplier for total multipliers of up to 30x, which is exceptionally high for Internet slots in today's industry.

Regular Wins

The top win is 6,000x for six of the white lightning symbol with at least one wild. It's worth 2,000x without a wild, which is still a very solid top jackpot. The gold record pays 1,000x, which jumps to 3,000x with a wild, if you get six of a kind. Six of the jukebox with a wild awards you with 1,500x (500x without), and you can even get 750x for five of the microphone with a wild (250x without).

The lower end of the pay table is rounded up by the record player and record, which pay 200x (600x with a wild). You can also get 150x (450x with a wild) for six of the guitar or radio. The music notes and telephone pay 125x for six of a kind, and of course that jumps up to the 375x level if that includes at least one wild symbol.

The Big Bopper is a good example of Realtime Gaming using an atypical theme and an atypical layout in a way that makes sense. Unlike many titles that use atypical themes, this game does not come across as being shallow on the gameplay end of things, and overall, we recommend that players check this game out because it's definitely a high-quality, high hit-rate experience waiting to happen.
