The objective of blackjack is to beat the dealer. This can be done either by attaining a total that is closer to 21 than that of the dealer, or by staying under the total of 21 while the dealer draws over 21, thereby "busting."
-
In blackjack, the player is dealt two cards, face up, while the dealer gives himself one card face up and the other face down (the "hole" card).
-
The player must exercise one of a number of options, acting first before the dealer has to.
-
The player can "stand" by taking no cards to his hand; he can "hit' by taking additional cards to his hand; he can "double down" by placing twice the amount of the bet in front of him and taking one hit to his hand; or he can "split" by taking a pair and separating it into two hands.
-
The player can double down on any two cards.
-
The player can split any pair.
-
The player cannot double down after splitting a pair.
-
When the dealer has an Ace showing, the player can choose to take "insurance" by placing half the amount of his existing bet in front of that bet. If the dealer has a "blackjack" (a two-card 21, meaning a ten is underneath), the player is paid at odds of 2-to-1 on the insurance bet. If the dealer does not have blackjack, the player loses the insurance bet.
-
If the player draws a two-card 21 (a "blackjack"), he is paid at odds of 3-to-1.
-
The player can bet in denominations of $1, $5, $25, $50, and $100, up to a maximum bet of $1000.
-
The player can choose the "fast play" option to increase the speed of play.
