Kung Fu: Deadly Arts

An extremely popular video game that is available for play on SkillGround, either for fun or for money, is Kung Fu: Deadly Arts. When an Ancient Chinese Village in the Hunan province of China loses its village leader, a Kung Fu tournament of hand-to-hand combat is arranged in order to determine
who the next leader will be.

Kung Fu: Deadly Arts

The four sons of the late leader, as well as a slew of other competitors looking to claim the title of the village elder, must compete in a series of fights to the death.  Each character has his or her separate deadly style of fighting, making for an unpredictable and exciting competition.

In order to win a Kung Fu match, a player must win more rounds than his or her opponent.  Each match is made up of an odd number of rounds in order to prevent a tie.  Each round lasts for sixty seconds.  In order to win a round you must attack your opponent in order to reduce his or her health.  If you reduce your opponent’s health completely before the round ends you win.  If both players still have health remaining at the end of the sixty seconds then the player with the most health remaining is the winner.  If there is a tie at the end of a round, then the round automatically goes into Sudden Death Overtime of thirty seconds and the first player to damage his or her opponent is declared the winner of the round.  If neither player scores a hit within these thirty seconds then the round is declared a draw and the match advances to the next round.

When playing Kung Fu: Deadly Arts on SkillGround, it is important to understand all of the controls.  As this game is played on your computer, the traditional controller is replaced with controls on your keyboard and mouse.  There is a complete list of controls on the SkillGround website.  The most important controls to know are that the left and right arrow keys will move your character left and right.  The up arrow key jumps, the down arrow key crouches.  The X-key sends a strong attack, the C-key sends a light attack and the Z-key sends a throw.  Use the spacebar to guard yourself.  Other series of keys will cause crouch attacks, jump attacks and more. These moves can be found on the SkillGround website when you start playing the game.

The best method of reducing your opponent’s health in Kung Fu: Deadly Arts is through Combo Attacks.  A Combo Attack is a combination of attacks in a row which are generally difficult to interrupt and will cause a lot of damage to your opponent.  Examples of combo attacks are “strong attack, strong attack”, “strong attack, light attack”, “light attack, light attack, light attack, strong attack” and “light attack, light attack, throw”.  There are many more combination attacks which can also be found on the SkillGround website.

By pressing the spacebar to guard, you will prevent these attacks from causing too much damage, although they will still cause a little.  However, you can parry attacks in order to prevent it from doing any damage at all.  In order to parry an attack you must be in the guard position and press the same attack button that your opponent pressed.  If your opponent sends a strong attack your way by pressing the X-key, you may press the X-key yourself while in the guard position and the attack won’t cause you any damage.  You have to be quick when parrying an attack, as it will only work if you hit the right keys before you are hit.  Also, keep in mind that a crouching attack may only be parried crouching and guarding while standing and jumping attacks may only be parried by standing and guarding.

Kung Fu: Deadly Arts

Some Combo Attacks can be countered.  If you successfully parry these combo chains then your character will launch into an automatic counter attack.  You may also manually counter combo attacks by launching into an attack immediately following the parry.

Throws are the only type of attack that you don’t have to be in the guard position in order to parry.  If your opponent begins a throw, simply press the throw button quickly to ward off their throwing attack.  Once you have parried a throw, quickly press the X-key for strong attack in order to launch a counter attack on your opponent.  Just bear in mind that a counter attack can quickly be reversed if your opponent presses the strong attack button in time.

In order to keep track of your progress in the game a heads up display is made available for you.  At the top of the screen, this display includes the health bar, time and matches won.  The health bar keeps a record of the current health of both players and is represented by two green bars at the top of the screen.  As the green bar diminishes a player loses health.  Time remaining in a match is also counted down at the top of the screen next to the health bars.  Finally, a record of matches won is shown in this same area so that each player knows where he or she stands.

When you are playing Kung Fu: Deadly Arts, you will have many characters to choose from.  Dau Lung, Wen Shan, Ching Fu and Juk Yee are the four sons of the previous village leader.  They each have their own skill, including Dau Lung’s ability to break boulders with his bare hands and Juk Yee’s ability to strike at pressure points and cause the organs of his opponents to explode.  There are also many more characters to choose from that have come from the village itself and surrounding villages.  In order to choose your character you should go to “My Account” and then “My Profile” from there.  In the “My Profile” section you will see a section for “Kung Fu”.  In this section, choose the character that you would like to play as from the drop down menu next to the left hand side image.  Don’t forget to save your preferences.  You may also choose your character from the “My Kung Fu Stats” dialog in the SkillGround lobby.

You may also choose from many different arenas to play in, such as the courtyard, the temple, the teahouse and the gazebo.  These different backdrops make the game more interesting.

Kung Fu: Deadly Arts is available for play on SkillGround in several play modes.  For single player games you have the option of score based games against the computer or progressive tournaments in which a number of players compete against the computer for top scores.  Multiple players can play in the 1 vs. 1 games.  You can also improve your Kung Fu skills by playing against the computer in practice rounds.
